What is a dedicated development team?

A dedicated development team is a long-running group of engineers, ring-fenced to a single customer, working as part of that customer's product engineering function rather than as an external vendor. The team takes ownership of a stream of product work end-to-end, typically for twelve months or longer.

TwinTeams runs dedicated development teams from Vietnam. Custom-recruited senior engineers, technically verified, ring-fenced to one customer for the duration of the engagement. Twelve-month minimum. No bench rotation.

Project-based outsourcing is organised around a defined scope and handover. Staff augmentation adds individuals to a customer's existing process. A dedicated team is designed for a continuing product stream: the customer keeps direction, while the team carries delivery context over time. The relationship between engineer, codebase, and other team members compounds over the engagement. The longer comparison sits at dedicated development team vs staff augmentation.

The smallest team is five engineers, one of them the tech lead. The roles shown are a typical starting team; the actual team is recruited to your stack and roadmap, and you interview every engineer before they join.

What is the difference between team extension and a dedicated development team?

Team extension describes a relationship: external engineers working as part of your team. It says nothing about scale, duration, or commitment.

A dedicated development team is a structural commitment: the engineers are ring-fenced to your engagement, the engagement runs for twelve months or more, and the team is built for you rather than pulled from a generic bench.

TwinTeams sells both: a team extension and a dedicated team. The structural commitments are what protect the engagement from the failure modes of looser team-extension arrangements: allocation drift, mid-engagement rotation, PM-translation overhead, bench-supply mismatches.

How do you choose a dedicated development team?

The category vocabulary is now category-default: "ring-fenced", "long-running", "embedded". Most vendors use it; fewer commit to it. Five questions sort the credible providers from the relabelling ones:

  1. 1

Is the team genuinely ring-fenced, or do engineers rotate between accounts?

  2. 2

Will I interview each engineer at final round before hire?

  3. 3

What's the minimum engagement length, and what happens if I want shorter?

  4. 4

Under what jurisdiction is the contract written, and in what currency will I be billed?

  5. 5

How is AI workflow discipline assessed during recruitment?

Dedicated development team FAQs

What are the benefits of hiring a dedicated development team?

The benefits compound. A team owning a slice of your product end-to-end accumulates context faster than rotating engineers can. Lower context-switching cost, accelerated decision-making, predictable delivery rhythm, and lower per-unit management overhead. The trade-off is commitment: minimum size, minimum duration, real onboarding investment. Favourable for product work; less so for short tactical bursts.

How much does a dedicated development team cost?

Costs vary by engineer seniority and engagement length. Vietnamese dedicated teams run lower than Eastern European nearshore on raw rate, but the comparison that matters is per-unit-of-delivery, not per-hour. TwinTeams operates at the premium-Vietnam tier and mid-market for international engineering services overall, comparable to Polish nearshore on rate and sharper on commercial commitments. When should you hire a dedicated development team?

When you have a product that needs sustained engineering depth, not a project that needs delivering and handing over. When local senior hiring is taking four to nine months and the roadmap can't wait. When freelance or staff-augmentation arrangements have hit their natural ceiling. The wrong time is a discrete, short, scope-defined project better served by project-based outsourcing.

How do you manage a dedicated development team?

The same way you manage your own engineering team, with two differences: the employment relationship sits with the provider, and you're working across geographies with deliberate operational rituals: shared standup, single point of escalation, recorded decisions, joint governance. TwinTeams handles recruitment, equipment, payroll, and HR; the customer manages roadmap, code review, architectural direction, product priority.
